Prue's story

Prue Ebery, 62, was killed in a crash near Albany on Saturday 25 April 2009. A former member of the New Zealand army, she was on her way to an Anzac Day service as a passenger in her brother-in-law’s car, along with her husband Mark and her sister.

The four of them were travelling on the highway coming around a corner, when a car travelling in the opposite direction clipped another vehicle whilst trying to overtake, and crashed into the side of the car Prue was travelling in as a back-seat passenger. The force of impact was huge and Prue was killed instantly.

The other three occupants all suffered serious injuries. Prue’s sister, who was also in the back seat, suffered serious spinal injuries and spent several weeks in intensive care. Following the crash she had to learn to walk again.

Prue’s husband Mark is supporting Road Safety Week 2012. He says: “The emotional and physical costs of each and every road crash are huge. I know from personal experience. So please take care when driving at all times – remember that it’s better to lose a minute in life than to lose life in a minute.”
