Ideas to fundraise from home

As the COVID-19 pandemic dominates the news and affects all our lives, here at Brake we are still remembering the lives of people who were killed in road crashes, and supporting families who have lost a loved one. But we need your help.

Whilst you're at home during lockdown here are a few things you can do to stay active, connect with family and friends and have fun while helping our vital work supporting people affected by road death and serious injury and campaigning for safe and healthy mobility for all.

Commit Your Commute

Commit your commute 2COVID-19 is affecting our normal fundraising. So if your new normal is working from home, please consider donating some of what you're saving in travel costs to Brake. #CommitYourCommute for safer roads, and help us to continue our work to prevent road deaths and injuries and provide vital support to people affected by crashes. Donate here.

#KindnessFromHome

KindnessFromHomeBrake is one of the charities supported by The Good Registry. They've set up a page on their website to enable you to donate money you might be saving from your usual expenses (e.g. takeaways, coffees, lunches) to support great causes like us.

We are asking you, if you can, to please give some #KindnessFromHome with the daily or weekly cost of your bought lunches/dinners, coffees or after-work drinks. You could gift what you're saving to a different charity each day (e.g. your morning coffee), or save it all up and give it to one or more charities in a lump sum.

Give some #KindnessFromHome here.

Virtual Quiz Night

Hold your own quiz night in your bubble! Or set up a quiz night for friends and family over video call. You can tailor this activity to be suitable for adults and children.

Here's a quick guide to setting up your quiz night:

  1. Set a date and time for your quiz, set up a video call and invite everyone to attend.
  2. Ask everyone to donate $5 to Brake as an entry fee. Or make it a $10 entry fee that you collect with half the money raised going to the quiz winners and the other half to Brake.
  3. Write the quiz questions. Ensure they are age-appropriate. There are lots of trivia questions and ideas for quiz rounds available online. You could theme your quiz around a particular topic e.g. movies, or have different rounds that each have a separate theme. You can even include a 'Road safety round' if you like.
  4. Decide if you want to have prizes and if so what they will be. It could be something they can redeem after lockdown has ended, e.g. a meal together when gatherings are allowed again, or something for now e.g. an e-gift card or Good Gift Card
  5. Hold your quiz! We'd love to see your quiz in action and share on our social media pages, so send us a photo of your bubble taking part to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Virtual Activity

Virtual Activity 2020This year we've expanded our Virtual Run to incorporate other types of activity. With gyms closed and races cancelled we're challenging you to help us continue our vital work, whilst you continue to keep active at home.

You could run a marathon on your treadmill, cycle around NZ on your exercise bike, organise a Skype danceathon with friends and family, take part in an online exercise class/workout, or how about getting some fresh air by committing to jog a kilometre a day (whilst social distancing of course!).

The money raised will go towards Brake's dedicated work preventing road death and injury and supporting those who have been bereaved or injured in road crashes.

#Staycation for Brake

Camp out in your garden and raise funds for Brake! This activity is appropriate for adults and/or children.

Spend a night in a tent in your garden, or have a sleepover in your living room with the people in your bubble. You could hold a campfire (using pieces of coloured paper or sticks/branches to make a pretend campfire), read stories, sing campfire songs or toast marshmallows on the BBQ.

Ask family and friends to sponsor you by making a donation to Brake. You can set up a fundraising/sponsorship page online, or ask people to donate and show you their receipt to show they sponsored you.

We'd love to see pictures of your #Staycation and share them on our social media pages, so please send any pictures to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
